Frequently Asked Questions

A safety lanyard is used as part of a personal fall arrest system (PFAS). It connects a full-body harness to an anchorage point or lifeline to arrest a fall or limit a worker's movement. There are different types of lanyards, including shock-absorbing lanyards for fall arrest and positioning lanyards for work restraint or support.

Safety lanyards don’t have a set expiration date, but they must be inspected before each use and at least annually by a competent person. If a lanyard shows signs of wear, fraying, cuts, broken stitching, heat damage, or impact loading, it must be removed from service immediately. Most manufacturers recommend replacing lanyards every 5 years under normal use, but this depends on frequency and environmental exposure.

OSHA regulations for lanyards fall under 29 CFR 1926.502(d). Key rules include:

  • Lanyards must be part of a personal fall arrest system that limits arresting force to 1,800 lbs.
  • They must be made from snaphook-compatible synthetic fibers with secure end connections.
  • Lanyards must be used with anchorage points capable of supporting 5,000 lbs per worker.
  • Shock-absorbing lanyards must limit free fall distance to 6 feet or less.

All lanyards must be inspected regularly and immediately removed from service if damaged or exposed to a fall.

To use a safety harness with a lanyard:

  1. Put on and adjust the full-body harness so it fits snugly without restricting movement.
  2. Attach the lanyard's snap hook to the D-ring on the back of the harness (between the shoulder blades).
  3. Connect the other end of the lanyard to an approved anchorage point or lifeline system.
  4. Ensure the lanyard is not twisted or slack and allows freedom to work while limiting fall distance.
