Self-Retracting Lifelines

A self-retracting lifeline (SRL) is a fall protection device that automatically retracts and extends as the user moves. In the event of a fall, the SRL locks and decelerates the fall quickly, minimizing fall distance and impact force. SRLs are commonly used in vertical or horizontal applications for greater mobility and safety.

The service life of an SRL depends on frequency of use, environmental exposure, and manufacturer guidelines. While there is no fixed expiration date, SRLs must be inspected before each use and undergo annual inspection by a competent person. If an SRL shows any signs of wear, malfunction, or has arrested a fall, it must be removed from service immediately.

OSHA outlines SRL requirements under 29 CFR 1926.502(d) and references ANSI Z359.14 standards. Key rules include:

• SRLs must activate quickly and limit arresting force to 1,800 lbs or less.
• They must limit the fall distance to a maximum of 24 inches (Type 1 SRL).
• Anchorage connectors must support a minimum of 5,000 lbs per attached worker.
• SRLs must be inspected regularly and after any fall event.

The main difference is in the maximum arrest distance:

• Type 1 SRLs – Limit free fall to 24 inches or less. Typically used in overhead anchorage or shorter fall clearance areas.
• Type 2 SRLs – Allow for up to 54 inches of fall distance. Often used in horizontal or extended-reach applications where additional movement is required.

Both types must meet ANSI/OSHA standards for fall arrest systems.
